Beyond the Headlines: A UN Namibia–SABA–NBC Conversation on Ethical GBV Reporting
Windhoek, Namibia – Ethical reporting on gender-based violence (GBV) is critical to protecting survivors and shaping public understanding. In a recent radio interview on IUM Radio, media and development partners came together to highlight the role of responsible journalism in addressing GBV in Namibia.
The discussion featured Letisia Alfeus, Communications Specialist at UNFPA Namibia speaking on behalf of the United Nations in Namibia, and Nomhle Kangootui, representing the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA) in partnership with NBC Namibia.
The conversation forms part of the UN Namibia–SABA–NBC partnership, which aims to strengthen media engagement and promote accurate, ethical and survivor-centered reporting on key development issues.
“Reporting on GBV is not just about sharing information. It is about protecting dignity, avoiding harm and ensuring that survivors are treated with respect,” the discussion emphasized.
In Namibia, GBV remains a significant challenge with far-reaching consequences for individuals, families and communities. Media plays a powerful role in shaping narratives, influencing attitudes and supporting national efforts to prevent and respond to violence.
The discussion highlighted the importance of:
• Avoiding sensationalism in reporting
• Protecting the identity and dignity of survivors
• Using accurate and non-stigmatizing language
• Promoting awareness of available support services
Through partnerships such as this, the United Nations in Namibia continues to work with media stakeholders to strengthen responsible reporting and contribute to broader efforts to end GBV.
