Karas kids receive Frieda and the SDG books

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are our universal blueprint for action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.
To help spread the word about the SDGs, ‘Frieda and the SDGs’ storybooks are circulated to remote areas in Namibia in an effort to reach more children to learn about the SDGs.
The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Windhoek under its Advocacy outreach and literacy programme collaborated with the Desert Fruit Foundation in the Karas region donating storybooks of Frieda and the Sustainable Development Goals to the children at Desert Pre-school on the farm.
40 Children are enrolled in the pre-school providing a safe place to learn, play and grow while their parents are at work on the farm. The farm is located in the Karas region, and with the closest schools being 50km away, this school is a haven for the farm children.
The Frieda and the SDG storybook will provide a basis to the children from 3 to 6 to learn how they can play a role in changing the world no matter how small they are. Forty storybooks were donated to the children on the farm. Reading and literacy are foundational skills children need in life, and early reading interactions enhance vocabulary and open a whole world to imagination, pictures and new concepts.
Reaching children on remote farms with the inspiring message of the sustainable development goals and Frieda is one of UNIC Windhoek’s main drivers to ensure that no child is left behind.

The Desert Fruit Foundation, based on a farm in the Karas region of Namibia, supports the educational journey of young children in the area. Established in 2017, the foundation rapidly became a place for educational, cultural and artistic development, as well as a place for sports and nutritional assistance. The foundation runs several laudable projects, such as providing transport to-and-from the farm and closest schools, a push to develop a library in Ariamsvlei Primary School with access to internet, and the establishment of a pre-school on the farm itself, which is continuously upgraded. Other projects include ‘Food in my Tummy’ (aiming to provide hearty and healthy meals for children five days a week) and 'Feel at home' (brightening the boarding house at Ariamsvlei Primary School with furniture, colour, etc. ).
