'Towards a sustainable and ethical use of 'Artificial Intelligence for Development'
The Government of Namibia in partnership with UNESCO hosted the Southern Africa Sub-Regional Forum on Artificial Intelligence (AI), under the theme 'Towards a sustainable and ethical use of 'Artificial Intelligence for Development' in Windhoek, Namibia, on 7-9 September 2022.
The 3-day hybrid forum gathered over 500 participants ranging from Ministers, Government representatives, AI experts, the private sector, young entrepreneurs, academia as well as learners from various schools to deliberate on five key sub-themes:
- AI landscape in Southern Africa
- AI Governance and standard setting
- Capacity building for AI development and application
- Inclusion and equity in the development and use of AI; and
- Strategic partnerships for AI in Southern Africa
Participants had the opportunity to collectively unpack the ethical issues related to the access and usage of data and AI, while strong emphasis was placed on discussions around the development of various policy and legal frameworks to ensure the protection of privacy and human dignity in the growing potential of AI.
The forum also integrated exhibitions and side events where stakeholders could demonstrate the practical aspects of AI.
