International Women’s Day was celebrated in the Omundaungilo Constituency, Ohangwena Region.
International Women’s Day was celebrated in Namibia in the Ohangwena Region, with the Government of Namibia on Friday 6 March.
The ceremony took place at the Onehova Primary School and was hosted by the the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare in conjunction with the Ohangwena Regional Council.
The theme of the event, “ I am Generation Equality : Realising Women’s Rights” is in line with UN Women’s new multi-generational campaign, ‘Generation Equality’ marking the 25th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
In Namibia this International UN observance is an opportunity for the country and all sectors to recognize the achievements of women in all spheres; from social, cultural and economic to political and beyond.
Delivering a message on behalf of the United Nations Namibia UN Resident Coordinator a.i, Ms. Rachel Odede, the Head of the Resident Coordinator’s Office, Mr. Carlos Fernandez, said, “We must always remind ourselves and sceptics that gender equality is not a women’s issue – it is a human rights issue and a peace and security issue.” He added, “Let us carry on the work for gender equality and leverage the power of partnership to ensure that the journey is successful and its gains irreversible. Allow me to quote the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres ‘Discrimination harms us all. The 21st century must be the century of women’s equality’. Let us all play our part in making it so.”
