April is Autism Awareness Month! On this occasion, we raise awareness about autism and celebrate the resilience of those affected by the disorder.
Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder characterized by behavioural and communicational affections that impact a person’s ability to navigate social interactions and also cause repetitive and restricted behaviour. Currently, there is no cure for autism spectrum disorders. However, research shows that activities that encourage independence can reduce autism symptoms.
To better deal with autism and support those who are affected by it, it is important to find out more about the disorder and we can all help. Petra Dillmann, Director of the Autism Association of Namibia, shared the following advice:
“Presume competence and listen to Autistics when it comes to accepting and understanding Autism.” This is important in breaking the harmful stigma and stereotypes associated with autism. Ms Dillmann also says we should acknowledge the hard work of educators who work with children with autism. “Appreciate teachers who go the extra mile to accommodate the needs of diverse learners in their classroom and school”.
Let us use this month of commemoration to talk more and advocate for greater autism awareness in our communities. For as Ms Dillmann says, “Together we are stronger”!
