Frieda undertook a fun adventure to N/aán ku sê primary school with the intention of spreading the messages of the SDGs to the children.
Frieda undertook a fun adventure to N/a'an ku sê primary school with the second graders from Windhoek International School (WIS). The children at WIS are Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) champions through the integration of the goals into all their learning, research, and development at school. In their efforts to help spread the messages of the SDGs to more children, the second graders invited ‘Frieda’ to accompany them on a special visit to N/a'an ku sê Primary School, 50km outside the capital city.
‘Frieda’ was very excited to get out of the office to do a handover of 50 storybooks through the UNIC Windhoek team. The donation of books is in line with the UNIC's mission to grow a reading culture among Namibian children and especially raise awareness of the SDGs.
The school at N/a'an ku sê is unique as it caters to the San or Bushman children of the employees working at the wildlife sanctuary and lodge. The school started in 2009 to provide free education to a minority group with severe challenges to education. It is estimated that approximately 1 in 5 San Bushman children attend primary school, and less than 1% finish secondary school. Therefore, this school offers a wonderful opportunity to help achieve Quality Education for more children in Namibia.
The Frieda storybooks will go a long way in exposing the children to the ways in which they too can play an active role in achieving the SDGs. The children were very excited to receive the books and thanked the UNIC team for making the donation possible. They sang beautiful songs and demonstrated traditional dances to welcome and thank Frieda and the WIS students to the school.
UNIC undertakes reading sessions with the Frieda storybooks to create awareness about the importance of the SDGs. Young children, especially vulnerable groups and minorities are often at risk of being left behind, and that is why it is critical they are a stakeholder in the achievement of these goals.
